Exactly 7 days ago, we welcomed the new year of 2014. Isn’t that great? But before we can start talks of the New Year and ideas of drafting New Year’s resolutions that many people fail to stick to throughout the year start crossing our minds, let’s take a few minutes and look back at some of the headlines that captured our attentions and left our tongues wagging last year.
Sechaba Pali in statutory rape saga
2013 saw gospel sensation and multi award winning Sechaba Pali going in and out of courtrooms for allegedly raping and impregnating a teenager (who was 15 years at the time of the incident) from the Free State province. The teenager is believed to be a younger sister of Sechaba’s backing vocalist and a source who was privy to the situation told the media that Sechaba bribed the girl with R1000 in a bid to silence her but after the bun in the oven started growing for everyone to see and wonder, the girl admitted to the family that she was raped by Sechaba, whose public persona speaks and agitates for good things, and thereafter a case of rape was opened in the nearby police station.
Winnie Modise says goodbye to her marriage.
Only a few days after the whatsApp status “hugs and kisses don’t pay bills”, that Winnie dismissed as having nothing to do with her separation from the husband, Thabo Modise, Winnie (Khethiwe Buthelezi-Ngcobo in Generations) packed her bags and kissed goodbye her marriage. Winnie was allegedly linked to a top KZN politician, an allegation she dismissed as a blatant lie only aimed at tarnishing her public image. In an exclusive interview with Drum magazine, she told the magazine that “no one knows the heat in my kitchen but me.”
Kelly Khumalo and sister spend night in prison for assault.
The Khumalo sisters spent a night in Hillbrow police station holding cells for allegedly beating up Mandisa Meyiwa, the wife of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goal keeper, Senzo Meyiwa. It is no secret Senzo and Kelly are dating and in more than one occasion Senzo protected Kelly (who’s rumoured to be pregnant with Senzo’s baby) and said she’s not the reason his marriage is in turmoil. But Senzo’s parents, on the contrary, it seems are reading from a completely different chapter. In an exclusive interview with Drum magazine (24 October 2013), Senzo’s mother disowned Kelly and her alleged (unborn) baby. “We don’t want her and her baby in this house”, Senzo’s mother was quoted as saying and also went further to label Kelly “a witch”. Ntombifuthi, Senzo’s Mother explicitly blames Kelly for her son’s marital woes.
Leleti Khumalo welcomes twins.
Only at the age of 43, Generations former actress, Leleti Khumalo and husband welcomed their bundles of joy in the world. Leleti was formerly married to polygamous Mbongeni Ngema and after years of marriage she pulled off the plug and walked away. The marriage did not produce any babies but today, after many years, she gave birth to adorable twins, a boy and a girl. PRAISES UNTO GOD!
Menzi Ngubane is training to become a sangoma.
Generations’ lead man, Menzi Ngubane (S’busiso Dlomo in the soapie) is said to be training to become a sangoma. According to reports, Menzi is receiving his training near Pretoria and during the say he’s permitted to attend to his other commitments and also go to his Generations job. Just like any other initiate, Menzi is given no preferential treatment and when time arises for him to do household chores like cooking, he does that.
Siyabonga Twala continues to roam the SA tv industry.
Renowned South African television personality Siyabonga Twala, known for his various television roles from Isidingo, Scandal, Generations, Isibaya, Muvhango and now Rhythm City is been on almost all the soapies in South Africa. Siyabonga claims he’s not over exposed but in reality he is. On Muvhango he played uptight MMC CEO and his three months contract expired and he’ll be on our screens until Jan/Feb and it is still unknown if he’ll ever return to the soapie.
Double blow for Millicent Mothiba: Divorce plus demotion at work.
Barely three years of marriage, Muvhango’s Millicent Mothiba (Agnes Mokoena-Mkhize- Hadebe-Mukwevho in the soapie) is reportedly heading for divorce with her husband. Millicent walked down the aisle in February 2011 with over 700 guests to witness the union but 2 to 3 years down the line, the marriage will soon be ancient history. As if her marital woes were not enough, Millicent is also said to be relegated from her prestigious lead actress to a mere call in actor, only called to report to work when needed or a part time actress in day to day language.
Maggie Benedict leaves Generations plus accused of shoplifting.
Seasoned actress and multi award winning television personality, Maggie Benedict (Akhona Griffith in the soapie) left the soapie after 3 years to pursue other interests. However, if rumours circulating are anything to go by, Maggie is leaving Generations for Isibaya. What caught the people’s attention was when Maggie was accused of stealing 125g tablets of Panado from Checkers. Maggie was since released on a warning and will appear back in court this year.
