Universal Channel has mistakenly published the obituary “Remembering Madiba 1918-2013” of former black president, Nelson Mandela last night, the City Press newspaper reported.
“From 1918-2013: His great grandfather and father both ruled as Inkosi Enkhulu (sic), or king, of the Thembu people in the Transkei region,” the message was displayed in the clip.
Last week, a 94 year old Mandela was admitted in hospital for pneumonia treatment and according to the presidency, Mandela is recovering well and there is no need for fear.
In respond to the Universal Channel clip, the ANC came out with guns blazing. According to the ANC spokes person, Jackson Mthembu, as quoted in the newspaper, the broadcast was “uncalled for and totally insensitive on the part of DStv as Nelson Mandela is alive and receiving treatment”.
In a bid to do damage control for causing false alarm, the channel issued apologising statement today.
“Like any international broadcaster, Universal Networks holds obituaries ready for every major statesman in the world.
“We unreservedly apologise to the Mandela family, to Universal Channel viewers and to DStv subscribers for the alarm and offence caused by this error.
Our thoughts and best wishes are with Madiba and his family for a speedy and full recovery,” the statement apparently said.
